Our most recent session included a new background generation system (mostly "Heroes of Today," but with a little Keeper insight added). Using this information, each player received a page commenting about their investigator, their background, and "secrets" only the player would know.
My investigator, Professor Angela Shrewsbury, is a young married woman working at Miskatonic University. Angela would be an attractive woman, although her face does not seem to fit together quite right. Her eyes are just a little too close together and her mouth is just a little too wide. She is well versed in the etiquette of the day, and can be the perfect socialite when necessary. However, experiences with her family and her husband have caused her to develop more eccentric tastes. She drives a three-wheeled motorcycle and wears split skirts (when doing field work). Being "windblown" tends to give her a rather wild, flushed look. She can often be found researching her small but well-thumbed library of occult references for new and unusual class projects.
Her position at the university is held because of her husband, an occult expert. She is currently alone. Her husband disappeared a short time ago while investigating unusual occult happenings. The university has kept her on to teach her husband’s classes (something she was doing anyway because of his field work), so she holds an unusually respectable professorship for a woman of the twenties. She continues to search for her husband, and has enlisted the help of her older brother. She rarely speaks to her other siblings (twin sister and younger twin brothers). Her eccentricities carry over to her search for her husband. Given the oddities of his disappearance, she is using the occult to search for him rather than more conventional means. She is a firm believer in magic, psychics and mediums. However, she is careful with whom she shares her beliefs. Her home contains a small hidden room underneath the staircase where she keeps her journal and any paperwork that might pertain to the occult or her research.
Keeper’s Comments.
Prof. Angela Shrewsbury --
Well, let’s start at the top of the character sheet and work down from there. OK, you are female. Women of the era, even exceptional ones as you certainly are, were almost without exception expected to be assistants or secondary consultants, etc., to men of like station. Will you defy the norm; probably suffer isolation? Will you accept the standard of the year and risk becoming a non-respected person whose opinion is considered of lesser consequence? Or something in between?
Anyway, next you are 26. At that age about half the girls were married. Are you? At that age you are probably not regarded as a great authority, you may even be an understudy.
OK, your stats say you are fairly healthy, if not athletic (STR 12, CON 13, DEX 16) and you are a sharp-witted and strong willed woman (INT 16, POW 14, EDU 20)(Lois Lane from the old Superman series?) APP 9 would say you are rather plain, or perhaps very beautiful except for that exceptionally bushy eyebrow, or quite dashing but for the nose of a great auk.
Your skills reveal you to be a valuable gatherer of research, good library use, credit rating, and linguist coupled with a lot of ‘ology’s. Your 100 in R/W ENG will enable you to use communication skills without penalty when writing letters, etc.
A couple of things about your equipment: $2,000 occult art and books -- is that a lot of cheap stuff or a few expensive items? And your bike is not very fast.
Now turn the character sheet over. This side is mostly about your brother. Your brother is currently in New Orleans practicing as a medium. He has always been your guiding light, the wisest person on Earth. You have always put him above everyone else, more than human at times. He is oddly beautiful in his way, with piercing, masculine eyes softened by a narrow feminine nose and chin on a hairless face. His hair is shiny black and is always worn in a short, thick braid. He always smells wonderful, of exotic oils that never smell the same when you have borrowed them. He is the undisputed leader of your family, as he raised you, your twin sister, and your younger, also twin brothers. He was gentle, if somewhat neglectful, as a parent.
Other notes. Only your brother knows of your parent’s fate. He has promised to reveal "when the stars tell him." Your whole family is sensitive to the supernatural. You are sensitive to supernatural emanations from people and are usually drawn toward such people. You and your sister are atypical twins in that you generally do not get along very well. The same is true for your brothers. Since you have moved from Vermont, those strange people have not found you to harangue you about joining that cult. They were beginning to frighten you. And oh, about that. I will only impose it on you at the most inconvenient times. BWA HA HA HA HA HA!
