Chapter 3: A visit to the Governor of St. Thomas

The streets of St. Thomas cleared as we made our way through them and up the stone steps to the Governor’s home. As we passed the guards and headed into the courtyard, an uneasy feeling struck all of us. The courtyard confirmed our uneasiness. Each of the guards were not those of the Governor but Spaniards; the invitation was a trap. Most of us were without firearms. Some had worn swords or carried daggers, but around the courtyard were eight men with muskets and shot intended for us. Charging into action, each of us attacked. Our duelist methodically fired and reloaded his pistols, holding the two barrels in one hand as he primed and reloaded with the other. Although some of us suffered injury, we were able to dispatch the majority of the Spaniards and also captured five.

Once the battle was over, the Governor’s steward informed us that the Governor was out of town. When he returned, we were granted an audience with the Governor. Sadly, the Governor has informed us that we must leave St. Thomas for the safety of her people. Hammer made the mistake of questioning the Governor’s decision and was flogged for his troubles. He later made up for the flogging with an interlude with the Governor’s daughter, however.
