Chapter 4: We Find the EndeavourTo soften the blow and to remove the immediate threat, the Governor informed us that the five Spanish prisoners would be able to escape. His men had located their ship, a Barque, in a cove on the other side of the island. We formulated a plan where Hammer would take the Sea Sprite around the island as O’Harrigan, myself, the Bull, Beiers the smuggler and a few other officers followed the "escaped" prisoners across the island with the Governor’s troops in pursuit. The land crew overtook the escapees and wore their clothing over our own. I managed to sneak up on the crewman manning the skiff and replace him. We rowed to the Barque and instigated the final step to our plan. As the boat was hauled from the sea, Bull’s marines (having swum out to meet us) clung to the sides of the skiff. The crew of the Spanish ship was so interested in the battle from the land and the retrieval of their crew, they did not notice Hammer and the Sea Sprite coming alongside opposite us. As the Spaniards swung the skiff on to the deck, their Captain was greeted with the barrels of my two flintlock pistols and the command, "Surrender your ship." Failing to surrender in a timely manner, the Captain’s death triggered the attack by Bull’s marines and the boarding from the Sea Sprite. In short order, the Spanish Barque was ours. The battle was not over, however. Some of the crew had managed to set the carpentry supplies on fire. Had our intrepid master carpenter not identified the fire for what it was, the ship would have been completely lost. As it was, I was burned and several others were driven to unconsciousness by the fumes. When I regained consciousness, I claimed the Spanish Captain’s green velvet coat and went to recover at my favorite Danish household. Two weeks later, both myself and the Barque were repaired and ready to sail. We sold the Boyer and the second Felucca. With the profits from this we were able to outfit the Sea Sprite as a merchant ship. Our plans for a merchant fleet have begun. With our carpenters’ expertise the Barque is able to keep the Spanish design intact. She is christened "Endeavour." We set sail for Port Royale.
