Players Interview: Night Cat

A candid conversation with the soft-spoken heart of the superhero group The Protectors about positive attitudes and good deeds.

An explosion rumbles through a quiet afternoon. Fire rips through a residential section of town. National secrets are on the line. All of these occurrences caused by an unknown, powerful being or beings. The national guard can’t handle the problem -- so the Protectors are called. These superheroes seem to be everywhere, doing everything, to make the world right again. Who leads this wonderful team of right? In the west it is Dr. Midnight, strong, debonair and charismatic. In the east it is Night Cat at the helm, fighting for justice with her friends and coworkers.
A soft-spoken, attractive woman of indeterminate age, Night Cat doesn’t appear to be aggressive enough to lead a powerful group of crime fighters. However, she is highly respected by her peers, and has a strong commitment to righting wrong in the world.
As our readers will recall from our first interview with Cougar, it is not easy to track down members of the Protectors. If anything, Night Cat was even more of a challenge. She is the first to admit that she is a private person, and Players is proud to be the first to obtain the first ever interview with the leader of the East Coast Protectors.
Our interviewer, Loyal Sterling, was a little wary o f the setting, as Night Cat insisted that her saber-toothed tiger, Kitty, also join them for the interview.
"I was a little nervous at first, having never met a saber-toothed tiger before, and wished I had remembered to wear some type of armor or protection. I need not have worried, for Kitty was a perfect companion and never interrupted the proceedings. It took a great deal of coaxing to convince Night Cat that she would be properly portrayed in the interview, but we quickly worked out the details, and I was on my way. Unlike my previous Protector interview, no one else was present during our time together. Night Cat did not seem to have that need for action that I had noticed with Cougar, and I could tell that it was her even temperament and concentration that made her the ideal leader for the team.
She quickly set the tone for the interview. With her first statement, I knew I would have to be cautious with my questioning.
Night Cat: I just want to start by saying that I’m not sure about doing this interview. I am a very private person.
Players: What made you join the Protectors?
Night Cat: I had many fights with villains and was pretty successful, but I always wondered if I could do better with more people by my side. One day a notice came out that all superheroes who would like to become a group (The Protectors) meet at the Old Oak Tree. I met several other heroes and we founded The Protectors.
Players: What is the Protectors’ mission in your eyes?
Night Cat: I feel the Protectors’ mission at this time is to help the public keep crime off the streets. Too many people try to take advantage of others and we need to stop it.
Players: How did you get your name?
Night Cat: I love cats!! Any kind of cats. Cats are stealthy, sneaky, quick and can see in the dark. I was always a night person, staying up late into the night. When I noticed my abilities, they were cat-like. So I named myself "Night Cat:’
Players: What do you feel you contribute to the Protectors?
Night Cat: I was one of the founders of the Protectors. I feel I contribute by being quick on my feet, strength, knowledge and the fact that I care about my teammates’ welfare.
Players: Do you think the group is successful in its mission?
Night Cat: Yes, I do feel the Protectors are successful. Even if we only stop one villain, we have made a difference. Plus being a Protector is not only stopping the bad guy but showing people, especially children, that crime does not pay.
Players: How did you attain your current position and do you feel you can execute it to the best of your abilities?
Night Cat: After the Protectors dealt with a tough battle, which I do not want to talk about, Dr. Midnight went to the west coast to start West Coast Protectors. I was nominated for the position of leader. I’m not sure if I was ready for this position but I accepted it as long as the team would help me out. All my teammates have helped me in a number of ways. I do not like to think every- body has to do as I say because somebody else may have a better idea. I’d like to think that we all are leaders.
Players: If you had it to do over again, would you change anything and what would it be?
Night Cat: No, I would not change a thing. Well...maybe...No. I don’t think so.
Players: What is your reason for doing what you do?
Night Cat: I do not think people, innocent people, should be taken advantage of. I just want to help anybody who needs it.
Players: How did you acquire your "super" abilities?
Night Cat: I do not wish to talk about how I received my super abilities. I just know I have them and will always use them for the good they can do.
Players: Tell me a little about your teammates?
Night Cat: My teammates are a group of individuals that are unique. They are always there for each other. Sometimes we have disagreements, but we always work them out. I’m not going to say anything more about them personally, because I do not like people talking about me without my permission.
Players: What was your most memorable experience?
Night Cat: My most memorable experience has to be the first time I met Utility. Kitty, my saber-toothed tiger, and I were walking down the street when I saw someone grab a little boy and take him into a building. The kid was screaming. Kitty and I went after him in the building. We followed him to the roof where a helicopter was waiting. This person, which I later learned was Utility, and I were in a hand-to-hand combat. The only thing I remember about the battle was that I martial kicked Utility in the chest and sent him across the roof of the building, across four lanes of traffic, and into the side of another building. He left an indentation in the building. Ever since then we have had it out for each other.
Players: What experience would you most like to forget?
Night Cat: I would like to forget all of them because I hate remembering how much bad is in the world. Yet I do not want to forget anything because it makes me remember how I handled the situation and what I can do to prevent it from happening again.
Players: Is your suit all natural fibers and if not, what is it made of?
Night Cat: My suit changes from time to time, just like fashion changes. I do like spandex-type out- fits because they fit my body like a second skin and I can move better. Sometimes I think superheroes worry more about their costume and how they look instead of dealing with a real problem, crime.
Players: Do you believe in justice or "street" justice?
Night Cat: I do not believe in street justice, yet sometimes you cannot help the situation any other way.
Players: Have you ever killed anyone?
Night Cat: No! I have not!
Players: Do you have a sidekick or companion and how did this relationship come about?
Night Cat: Kitty, my saber-toothed tiger, is my sidekick. We work so well together that she knows what I want her to do before I tell her. She has been with me since she was little.
Players: Are you happy with your current situation?
Night Cat: For the most part I am happy. I love the fact I can help people when they need me. But sometimes I’m not happy when I think I want a husband and a family. I’m just not sure if I can give up on the superhero stuff. Besides, it is not like any man is offering marriage or even dating at this point in time. I just think I intimidate men. So, for now I guess I’m happy.
Players: What would you consider your greatest vice?
Night Cat: My greatest vice would be chocolate. I love sweets but chocolate is the greatest. Give me chocolate and I am in heaven!
Players: Are you happy with the way the media portrays you?
Night Cat: I have never had the media say anything bad about me. It may be because I don’t usually do interviews. And if the media says bad things about me, I figure they don’t know me.
Players: Who do you have the most respect for?
Night Cat: I respect anyone who stands for goodness and justice. I could not just pick one person; there are so many in the world.
Players: Did you have a mentor?
Night Cat: That is an easy question, Dr. Midnight, who in my mind is one of the greatest super heroes. He always seems to have the right answer or does the right thing. Everybody respects him. I hope I can lead the Protectors as well as he does.
Players: Do you break the law?
Night Cat: I really do not know about you asking this question. Why would I, a Protector, break the law. I am upset you would even ask.
Players: Have you ever regretted things you’ve done?
Night Cat: I do regret some things I have done. Doesn’t everyone have some regrets?
Players: Which villain do you most respect?
Night Cat: I do not respect any villains, not even one. Villains do not deserve respect. All they do is take, abuse, use and destroy. Can you respect anyone who does that?
Players: Which villain do you find yourself in competition with the most?
Night Cat: That is a toss-up between Utility and Shamrock. Utility has had it in for me since the first time we met. I told you about that earlier. Shamrock seems to always show up. No matter what is going down, Shamrock is usually involved.
Players: What were your toughest group and individual battles?
Night Cat: I do not want to talk about the toughest battle the Protectors had because I do not want somebody to think they almost got us. I think every battle is a tough battle because crime is everywhere. Crime has to be stopped and until then fighting any crime is tough.
Players: What do you consider "going too far" in the name of justice?
Night Cat: Going to far is when you cause an innocent to get hurt.
Players: Do you ever see yourself retiring?
Night Cat: At the present time, no, I don’t think I will retire. Maybe someday if I have a family I might not fight anymore, but I would always give my opinion on a situation if asked for it. So until my status of single, no dependents, changes, I’m not retiring.
Players: Have you ever accidentally taken an innocent’s life?
Night Cat: You asked me earlier if I have killed anyone and I do believe I answered NO:
Players: Have you ever fallen in love with an opponent?
Night Cat: No I have not. I do believe everybody has some good in them, and I do believe people can change. But I have never fallen in love with an opponent.
Players: Do you want to go out in a blaze of glory?
Night Cat: I do not like to think about death. But since you asked, no. I have seen and heard about battles where a super hero dies. They are never a "Blaze of Glory." If I had to die to save the world, I would.
Players: Do you have any particular religious beliefs?
Night Cat: I will not discuss religion with you. I believe people should worship who or what ever they want, not what they are told to do.
Players: What do you see yourself doing in 10 years?
Night Cat: I do not know. At present time, being a Protector, but if I had a family, I don’t know. Ten years is a long time away.
Players: Have you ever used your abilities strictly for personal gain?
Night Cat: No. If you are a super hero, you use your abilities for the good of the world. A villa in uses their abilities for personal gain.
Players: Do you consider yourself above the law?
Night Cat: No. Nobody is above the law.
Players: How do you relieve stress?
Night Cat: Lately I have a lot of stress. I do a lot of different things to relieve stress. Sometimes I use the danger room at the complex. That allows me to relieve stress physically in a way. Sometimes a nice hot bubble bath, candles, music or a romance book and chocolate works wonders on me.
Players: What would you do if there was no crime?
Night Cat: Someone like me always wishes for no crime. If there was no crime, then that means the Protectors and the justice system have done a great job. But I know in my mind that there will always be crime. How unfortunate that is. If there was no crime in the world, I would try and help the hungry, homeless and the less fortunate. And if no human needed my help at all, there is always the animal kingdom.
Players: What words of wisdom do you have for our readers?
Night Cat: My words of wisdom are be nice to people and animals. Don’t always expect something in return, and keep on the straight and narrow path of the good, or Night Cat and the other Protectors will just have to help you.
